Homemade cleaning solutions: Safe alternatives to commercial, toxic cleaners

Wednesday, February 3, 2010

I am tired of buying store bought cleaning products. For many reasons, I just plain do not want to do it anymore. One reason is that it can be very expensive. Another, I have a weird nose. I smell everything, even things others do not notice. I am very sensitive to fumes, and unpleasant smells. I also hear everything within a ten mile radius, but that is another topic...
Some commercial cleaning solutions are reported to be toxic, and possibly cancer causing agents. Have you ever cleaned something with bleach or with a bleach containing cleaner? It does not take long to become light headed and nauseous after smelling the fumes, especially if done without proper ventilation.

I have been researching homemade cleaning solutions. I have tried baking soda to clean the bathroom, and it works surprisingly well. However, I think next time I am going to have to add to it.  It does not clean as well on its own as I need it to. We have six people, four of them kids using two bathrooms. So, they need lots of cleaning.

Do you have any cleaning solution recipes? Feel free to share! Please! : )
Here are some I have found on the net:

Homemade Household Cleaners
Lots of good info here!

This recipe is from Save Money with Safer Homemade Bathroom Cleaners an article written by Christopher T. Reilly.

All-Purpose Bathroom Cleaner

Mix 1/2 cup vinegar and 1/4 cup baking soda (or 2 teaspoons Borax*) into 1/2 gallon (2 liters) water. Store and keep. Fill a sprayer and use for removal of water deposit stains on shower stall panels, bathroom chrome fixtures, windows, bathroom mirrors, etc.
Note: If Borax* is not available, the nearest alternative is non-chlorine laundry bleach powder. It is a safer, minimally "toxic" bleaching alternative containing Sodium Percarbonate which replaces "Chlorine Bleach" with minimal health effects .
